History of this model :

The pinnacle of gigantism: Reliance is the last of the giants before the creation of the J class.

It cost a fortune to build, with William Rockfeller , Henri Walters and Cornelius Vanderbilt contributing to the financing. Aluminum is used to save weight.

She has a flat-bottomed hull and a long, slender keel. Her phenomenal sail area - nearly 1500 square meters on a single mast - enables her to pick up speed as soon as the breeze picks up.

At the helm, Charlie Barr mastered the monster and its immense sail area, and beat the other defenders to the punch.

In the final, Sir Lipton's Challenger, Shamrock III, designed by William Fife, is smaller and can't do anything, is made of nickel steel and has a bulbous ballast. But her sail area is 200 m² smaller.
Reliance won the America's Cup in 1903.
