History of this model :

Guy Tabarly, Eric's father, bought Pen Duick in 1938 from the Lebec family of Nantes. This was the era of the birth of yachting in France, and yachts were few and far between. This boat, whose Breton name means "black head" and refers to the black-capped chickadee, was in fact designed in 1898 by the Scotsman William Fife under the name Yum. At the age of 41, Fife was already one of the world's leading naval architects. His talent was to spawn many other boats. He built his boats in his sheds in Fairlie, a village south of the mouth of the Clyde. Yum, however, was built at Gridiron and Workers Carrigaloe, near Cork, Ireland, for her first owner Adolphus Fowler.
